Of course, you will have to let go of those old fears about this new fangled blog and social media thing and you have to let go of any preconceived notions or attachments to a specific result.

Google now uses speech to text conversion. That means that Google takes the SPOKEN text from your videos, and converts it to text—AKA RELEVANT CONTENT!

So you want to be on the 1st Page of Google?

Did you set up that blog we told you to set up? What about that Youtube account? You want to use really hammer your blogs and videos with relevant keywords to your field. Right now music and fancy schmancy slideshows don’t have the same effect as good copy, and a well-scripted video you can take with a flip camera. Something else to keep in mind when you are writing your scripts: your main keywords belong up front, and use them throughout the video, stay true to who you are and then get ready to watch your site rocket to the top!

It’s time you got out of your own way!

We are our best allies and worst enemies. This thought occurred to me somewhere between my Sumo walk and slide exercises at Fit Camp (TM Self-Time Fitness) class this morning. I wanted to blame this weekend’s fried chicken from Flora and Ella’s for weighing me down, but the real answer is it has been fear weighing me down for quite some time.

Fear of what it would take to get back in shape has kept me out of the gym. Fear of not being able to support my two children fueled my penchant for long hours, little sleep and calorie-rich food. Fear of failing in business drove me to cut down on my networking events—and trust me (and author Tom Peters), “You can’t shrink your way to greatness!”

So what, does all this have to do with Internet Marketing and Social Media?

There is plenty of information available on the benefits of Internet Marketing and Social Media: in the press, on the net—everywhere. So, we can’t use lack of information as an excuse anymore than we can use lack of health information as an excuse for being overweight and out of shape.

So, why is it that we reach for the brownie or cigarette instead of the yogurt with fruit? Why is it that businesses continue to pour hundreds and thousands (and more) into print advertising campaigns that have a low return on investment when Internet Marketing and Social Media campaigns are a fraction of the cost and yield a much higher return?? Fear-of-change. It’s that simple, and potentially deadly to both body and business.

Seems like everyone I talk to these days is going to write a book. That’s awesome! However, statistically speaking, I know that only a small percentage will get published. Even fewer will achieve success in brick and mortar bookstores because it’s about more than great writing today. It’s about selling.

Honestly, it was a very cold harsh day in Virginia when I started writing query letters for my first novel and discovered that the publishers wanted to know how saleable my book would be. Saleable? I had to do a market comparison on my book? Wasn’t writing a good story enough? Sharing what I have learned since through my own experience as an author and marketing authors is a true passion of mine.

Publishing is a business and businesses all boil down to the numbers. Authors like Jack Canfield, Stephen King and Sherrilyn Kenyon all have dynamic interactive fan sites that help build their fan bases. They are also integrating social media into their marketing campaigns to extend their reach and they are extremely successful in pre-sales as a result.

In November, I am going to have the privilege of speaking on a panel of other marketing professionals to a plethora of published novelists from the Romance Writers of America. “How do I get on the first page of Google?” “Where can I get Cheats for Google?” We are asked these questions all of the time by savvy business owners who know that the only way they are going to succeed in today’s market is by having a strong website, which can be found on the first page of Google. There are a few tried and true methods to help get you there, which I will briefly touch upon in this piece. I will also share a big cheat to watch out for.

Get Cheats:

Blogging is extremely important! Google likes relevant content that is regularly updated. So either you need a blog or a press area which is updated with data relevant to your business and industry.

AdWords campaigns can be an extremely effective way to drive traffic to your site. The best thing about AdWords is that it’s pay-for-performance advertising. That means you are paying when someone clicks on it, which is a vast difference from the thousands you can sink into beautiful print ads that may or may not be seen.

Keywords are extremely important. When you are writing copy, make sure that you are using keywords that are high on the search list. You’ll want to use them in your title and then at least three times in your copy. For instance, “Get Cheats for Google” gets almost 25 Million hits a month.

Watch out for this Cheat!

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT put keywords in the background on your website. Google has an algorithm, which can extrapolate data recognizing the similarity between the text color and background and you can actually end up pulled from searches for doing this. Your site might never recover from this type of penalty.
